Ardent Sessions: Oh No Oh My vs. Royal Bangs

This week on the Ardent Sessions we catch up with two southern bands on the verge of making it big. Last year Austin’s Oh No Oh My and Knoxville’s Royal Bangs came to Memphis  to play a charity event together and we were lucky enough to have them each come by and play a set for us! Oh No Oh My are currently  working on a new album in Austin and Royal Bangs are busy touring the county!

Ardent Sessions: Carney

Reeve Carney, lead singer of the LA based band Carney, recently nabbed the title role of Spiderman in the new Broadway musical set to open in February. The music and lyrics for the production were written by none other than 22-time Grammy® Award-winners Bono and The Edge of U2 with direction by Tony® Award-winner Julie Taymor (The Tempest, Across The Universe, The Lion King). In the meantime, he’ll be out on tour fronting Carney as they prepare to release their debut full-length album which is due for release at the end of the year.

Ardent Sessions: What Made Milwaukee Famous

What Made Milwaukee Famous Polay The Ardent Sessions

Few have been disappointed with the sophomore effort from Austin-based band What Made Milwaukee Famous, What Doesn’t Kill Us .  The band has gone through a few changes since recording their Ardent Session, including losing keyboardist and all-around stellar dude Drew Patrizi to NYC and marriage. However, this set stands as a testament to just how good this band is live. The music sounds amazing even if you can hear the exhaustion in the voices of the band in the banter between tracks who landed in Memphis the day after a long weekend at Bonnaroo.

Ardent Sesssions: John Paul Keith and the One Four Fives

On this week’s edition of the Ardent Sessions we check in with John Paul Keith and The One Four Fives. JPK, formerly of The Nevers, Stateside and Ryan Adam’s Pinkhearts, has spent the last few years in Memphis playing with Harlan T. Bobo, Jack Yarber and even the legendary Jim Dickinson. He also teamed up with some of Memphis’ finest to showcase his own songwriting chops. Last year he released Spills and Thrills locally on vinyl and magically the gospel of the 145s spread. Back in April the album was released worldwide on Big Legal Mess, an imprint of the Mississippi-based Fat Possum label. The band will be out on the road in October opening for Lucero, and Jack Oblivian & The Tennessee Tearjerkers, as a part of Lucero’s “Ramblin’ Roadshow & Memphis Review”.

Ardent Studios is very proud to have hosted Lucero on their 10th Anniversary! Don’t miss this stellar performance which includes music from their entire catalog. Lead singer Ben Nichols guides us through some of the band’s earliest songs, latest gems and plays several heartfelt renditions of tunes that are rarely played live. Rick Steff, a member of the Memphis Rhythm Band that backed Cat Power on her breakout album “The Greatest“,  joins the band on B3 organ, piano and accordion. Look for the new Lucero album, 1372 Overton Park, here.

Ardent Sessions: Rainy Day Manual

Rainy Day Manual blends dreamy piano and intricate guitar melodies with a pair of contrasting vocal styles. The band likes to jump from cranked up songs full of fist-pumping guitar hero enthusiasm, to more delicate ditties that highlight their melodic propensity. RDM, which was formed by Seth Hendricks and Chris Faulkner in 2007, recently released their highly anticipated EP, Vox A Copia, which they are giving away for free via their website. How 21st century!

Ardent Sessions: De Novo Dahl

De Novo Dahl has been building it’s fanciful stage persona and quirky indie -pop repertoire via a myriad of members for almost 8 years.  While the band began their journey in the college town of Murfreesboro, they now call Nashville their home. After a self-released EP, a debut album on Theory Records called Cats & Kittens, which included a bonus disc of remixes, last year they released their sophomore album, Move Every Muscle, Make Every Sound, via Roadrunner Records.

With their rainbow colored Nudie suits and their persistent need to make the audience a integral part of their performance, the band’s live act has included everything from an ice-cream social, a night devoted to the science-fiction movie Tron, a “beach party” with free admission to patrons in bathing suits, to a show at which the band members dressed as cowboys and served pasta to create a “spaghetti western”. If they come to your town, you might just want to check them out!

Ardent Sessions: Oli Brown Band

Up-and-coming guitar prodigy Oli Brown formed his breakout blues band, The Oli Brown Band, at the ripe old age of 17.  A year later he released his debut album, Open Road, to astounding critical praise, eventually landing on several “Best Of” blues lists in 2008. With so much early recognition, his short career has hardly been the story of someone who has been living down and out. He even already has a signature line of guitars from Vanquish in production. So, it’s hard to believe this kid could know anything about the blues! However, when he arrived in Memphis in the spring of 2008 to perform at The International Blues Challenge, he proved that whether his own life was the inspiration for his art or if he simply was incredibly gifted at channeling his muse, the music moved the crowds just the same.  John Fry personally invited Brown to come to Ardent Studios to record The Ardent Sessions.

Ardent Sessions: Antenna Shoes

Tim Regan splits his time between Austin and Memphis, two cities known worldwide for their connection to music. He also splits his time between three bands,  Memphis’ orchestral pop sensation Snowglobe (recently featured on MTV’s $5 Cover), Austin’s indie rock darlings Oh No Oh My, and his latest incarnation, the melodic psych-rock leaning Antenna Shoes. The band’s debut album, Generous Gambler, was released on the famed Shangri-la Projects alongside cult phenoms like The Grifters, Simple Ones, Kelly Deal, Doug Easley and Jim Dickinson. Most of their sophomore effort has already been recorded at Ardent Studios with producer Pete Matthews – so keep your eyes out for it in late 2009/early 2010!
