Ardent Sessions: Wax Fang

Wax Fang

While we could throw compliments for Louisville’s Wax Fang at you as thick as molasses – instead we decided to just pass along a review from a fan – which we think says it all:

La La Land is an amazing record. Unique, Epic, Sprawling, Wierd, Fun, Heavy, Pyschadelic, Amazing. Go see them live and then multiply all of that by 10! Scott Carney for president!”

If you can’t make it to one of their shows, their performance on The Ardent Sessions can easily substitute as the next best thing!

Ardent Sessions: Star & Micey

SAM

Star & Micey are masters at creating heartbreakingly beautiful music. Their sound can be described as introspective and folky, yet rocking and soulful, which makes sense since they call Memphis home. Although they are in a constant search for a new drummer, that has not stopped them from touring non-stop in support of their debut album on Ardent Music. From busking in the street to playing 1500 person venues, they’re on a mission to share their music from coast to coast. Don’t miss them on this week’s Ardent Sessions.

Ardent Sessions: Carney

Reeve Carney, lead singer of the LA based band Carney, recently nabbed the title role of Spiderman in the new Broadway musical set to open in February. The music and lyrics for the production were written by none other than 22-time Grammy® Award-winners Bono and The Edge of U2 with direction by Tony® Award-winner Julie Taymor (The Tempest, Across The Universe, The Lion King). In the meantime, he’ll be out on tour fronting Carney as they prepare to release their debut full-length album which is due for release at the end of the year.

Ardent Sessions: What Made Milwaukee Famous

What Made Milwaukee Famous Polay The Ardent Sessions

Few have been disappointed with the sophomore effort from Austin-based band What Made Milwaukee Famous, What Doesn’t Kill Us .  The band has gone through a few changes since recording their Ardent Session, including losing keyboardist and all-around stellar dude Drew Patrizi to NYC and marriage. However, this set stands as a testament to just how good this band is live. The music sounds amazing even if you can hear the exhaustion in the voices of the band in the banter between tracks who landed in Memphis the day after a long weekend at Bonnaroo.

Ardent Sesssions: John Paul Keith and the One Four Fives

On this week’s edition of the Ardent Sessions we check in with John Paul Keith and The One Four Fives. JPK, formerly of The Nevers, Stateside and Ryan Adam’s Pinkhearts, has spent the last few years in Memphis playing with Harlan T. Bobo, Jack Yarber and even the legendary Jim Dickinson. He also teamed up with some of Memphis’ finest to showcase his own songwriting chops. Last year he released Spills and Thrills locally on vinyl and magically the gospel of the 145s spread. Back in April the album was released worldwide on Big Legal Mess, an imprint of the Mississippi-based Fat Possum label. The band will be out on the road in October opening for Lucero, and Jack Oblivian & The Tennessee Tearjerkers, as a part of Lucero’s “Ramblin’ Roadshow & Memphis Review”.

Lead singer Ben Nichols guides us through some of the band’s earliest songs, latest gems and plays several heartfelt renditions of tunes that are rarely played live. Rick Steff, a member of the Memphis Rhythm Band that backed Cat Power on her breakout album “The Greatest“,  joins the band on B3 organ, piano and accordion. Look for the new Lucero album, 1372 Overton Park, here.
